A new series I've been introduced to! Legion of Super Heroes! And the coolest of these new heroes, thus presented in my art: Brainiac 5! (aka Quirel Dox, his real name, but he never goes by it in the series). And because I can't figure out which I like better, I present B5 in both his Season One and Season Two forms. Take yer pick.
For info on the series, I'll just reference my journal post. ([link]) I explain a little about the series, why Brainy's the coolest character ever, and I give a funny list of "Things I've Learned Watching Legion of Super Heroes". For this pic though, I'll just say that Brainy's the smart-guy of the group, and thus makes him cool. The techno-geeks always kill me. To top it off, he's an android, which is pretty interesting as it is (even more so because he's most definitely NOT a robot in the comic books).
So which is better? Kid Brainy or Teen Brainy? Well, Lil' B was just such a cute kid, I was kinda sad when I found out he was getting a makeover for season two. Not having much experience with people, Kid B5 (don't know his age; could be anything from 12-14) was very uptight, do-it-by-the-book and was always boasting his twelfth-level intelligence. However, because he's a robot, the series kinda picked on him and he took more damage than I think all the other characters combined through the course of the first season (with possible exception of Superman). I mean, he even sorta DIED in one ep. Another ep he went stark raving loony, which has to be one of the funniest things in that cartoon thus far. ^_^ But Brainy always comes out on top with his vast array of gadgets, battle-mode transformation, and his limitless mindpower. Big B. While I'll miss the "everyone's kid brother" look of season one, Teen B5 is SERIOUSLY COOL. After hanging around people for a few years (it's been about 1 1/2 - 2 years since the end of season one) Brainy's learned a thing or two about emotion, and shows it a little more frequently (particularly a unique brand of arrogance). He's yet to mention his twelfth-level intelligence, which is kinda sad, but then again season two's been a little action-packed and he probably hasn't had much chance to advertize it yet (although he manage a little jibe on Superman X about thinking, which X deserved quite frankly). As of my typing this, only two eps have aired of Season Two, and we've gotten hints that there is definitely more to Brainy than meets the eye (actually, we also got a bunch of those in season one...the guy hides a lot more than he lets on). So what's in store for everyone's favorite android? We'll have to watch to find out.
Hey, waitta sec...how's KB flying when I FORGOT TO DRAW HIS FLIGHT RING??? *Headdesk* Plus, I colored KidB's forearms wrong; they're supposed to be green like the rest of him. Maybe I'll put up a correction...what do you think? Should I fix it? EDIT: Too late, I did. His arms are green again, and don't blend so much with TeenB behind him.
Oh yeah, about the art...
I tried to keep to the Legion art style, I really did. But while some of the...exaggerations of figure fits the series, it looked terrible to me on paper, so I tweaked a bit. For example, Teen B5's got more meat on his joints in my pic, although he's still got those "ballerina feet". I think he also put on a foot in height; he shouldn't be that tall. O_o Oh well. The faces are almost completely the series though. In fact, I used a screenshot for Teen B5's face. I couldn't find one in the pose I wanted for Kid B5, so I made do with several for reference and used my usual technique of making it up. Coloring comes from screenshots from the first ep of each season. Since the colors don't change at all between the seasons, I didn't really use Season Two much. Oh, and Brainy gets my vote for STRANGEST SUPERHERO COLOR COMBO EVER. O_o Seriously...black, yellow, metallic green, and some sorta pinkish fushia? Only he could pull it off, and boy does he ever. Shading is all me. Between the spandex and metallic properties of being, well, a robot, there was a whooole lotta shine to go around. And is that really spandex? I know Vampire-like-Dude-in-High-Heels (Drax...was that his name?) had grabbed him by his nylon shirt, but...the kid transforms. Even his suit. So, I don't really know WHAT this kid is made of. I know from a comic book that his race "grows", but how can they if they're made of metal? Is it organic metal? I would dearly like to find out what the heck makes this android race tick. But about shading. Lighting is coming from two different directions for each Brainy, because it added contrast. Background! I'm doing so much better at these lately, but that's becase I've been putting 3-4 times as much time and effort into them. This background was modeled after a screenshot in Season One Ep 6, "Fear Factory", where Brainy faces a situation modeled to look like his home planet (or something like that). I actually used vectors for THE ENTIRE THING. OK, not for the shading; that was curtousy of Burn and Dodge tools. The floor is a pattern I made myself, with hue and shine added. I like.
Great, I've rambled again.
Brainiac 5 and the Legion of Super Heroes is copywrighted to DC comics and Warner Brothers (I think...it's Kids WB that airs this cartoon, right?).
Nice. I think I heard somewhere that his species is partially organic and contains nanites. Perhaps his body is made of trillions of nanite 'cells' that grow and divide and stuff.
Dah! Brainy! I love that kid! Still my favorite char from Legion of Superheroes. Ah, fond memories. Still can't decide which Brainy I like better. Little Brainy's got the adorable little bro thing going on but Teen Brainy.... Nevermind I like Teen Brainy best. Wonderful pic you have here. The color's so lush. And it does provide a handy comparison between the seasons. I agree, he does have an odd color scheme. But hey, it works for him!
i miss this show and you are right kidsWB played this cool show ( i even read the comic they change a lot about that comic in the show but it still cool)
